About Us

Big Tick Ltd was started by Dave Hallett after several years of freelance work. After an interest in lighting and sound was originally kindled in school, Dave started as 'local crew' in Sheffield University (ably trained and co-ordinated by Davie Bell) and spent the time finding out how a show really works.

That was followed from 1995 by about 18 months in South Wales working for Michael Samuelson Lighting - becoming immersed in the (very different) world of drama and TV. Freelance life then beckoned, and Dave worked as a freelance lighting tech from 1997 - 2007, when Big Tick Limited was formed to continue the same work.

During that time and since then, we have been involved in a huge range of projects, from small to very large, all over the world, whether as lighting tech / operator / crew chief / designer or production manager. More recently, much of Dave's work has been as lighting crew chief - also known as gaffer - on televised shows, with a decent sprinkling of household names among those shows. It has been sometimes difficult and usually very busy, but always rewarding.

In addition to the countless shows where we have just supplied Dave's services, there have been several shows recently where Big Tick Ltd has supplied the entire lighting crew for a show. Furthermore we can also supply all the of the lighting design, equipment and crew for a show of any size. We have also moved back into technical production management over the last couple of years and are keen to persue that avenue too.

"Lighting started as my hobby at school in the 1980s, and it is still a joy and privilege to make one's living at one's hobby"
